The NAPGC Men’s Championship National Final has traditionally been held over the August Bank Holiday. In 2016 the decision was made to bring the competition forward into July to allow the Scratch winner to compete in England Golf’s Champion of Champions event held in early September at Woodhall Spa. After some success in 2015 we also continued with the format of running the Men’s Championship in the morning on the Bracken course with the option for 0-9 handicappers of playing another 18 holes on the Hotchkin course in the afternoon in the Scratch Championship. The field did include 7 players who were only entered in the Scratch competition not having qualified for the Men’s Championship through a regional qualifier. We nevertheless had a very strong field for the National Final with 27 Category 1 players in the field of 70.
Conditions on the day were perfect for golf with sunshine, a very light breeze and the course in near-perfect condition. These conditions were not reflected in the scores though with only 3 players matching par or better and the CSS finishing at 2 over par. Ben Tobin of Basildon was the only player to better par with a gross 71 against a par of 72. The defending champion, Charlie Wilkinson of Cheshunt, playing off scratch shot a level par 72 to win nett overall on countback.

Another change to tradition in 2016 was to move the Regional Champion trophies from the Scratch Championship into the Men’s Championship allowing more competition for each region. Scores of gross 76 from Patrick O’Neill (Brent Valley) and Steve Green (Rose Hill) won the Southern and Midlands Regions respectively while a gross 88 from Charlie Strange took the Northern Region trophy. This left Steven Meacham with a gross 78 as the best gross score in Division 1 for the Piccadilly Division 1 trophy.
In the other divisions the Piccadilly Trophies for Division winners went to Charlie Wills of Birchwood Park in Division 2 with a nett 72; Matthew Harris of Rose Hill with nett 74 in Division 3 and Liam Albert of Birley Wood with a nett 72 in Division
