Once again the NAPGC returned to West Middlesex Golf Club for it’s annual Senior Championships. The competition is open to those men who are over 55 (Over 70’s qualify to enter the Saveall Trophy) and for Ladies who are over 50 years old. The extremely hot weather meant that we were greeted with burnt fairways but the green keeping staff had done an excellent job of preserving the greens which were fast and true.
There was a good entry for the men’s competition-seventy one players in all.The winner of the Riley Seniors Cup was Alan Morris (20) from Huntswood who scored an impressive 41 stableford points – two clear of the runner up Randolph Pereira (16) from Trent Park. Third place with 38 points (on count back ) went to Cheshunt’s Ray Smith (27).
The Men’s Senior Gross Championship title went this year to Freddie Holmes (2) from Hainault. He will now go onto represent the NAPGC at the EG English County Champion of Champions tournament at Woodhall Spa on 15th/16th September 2018.
The Burdett Team Trophy (combined stableford points) went to the Trent Park team of Randolph Pereira (16) and Alan Forbes (13). Their winning score of 76 points was three clear of the Haste Hill pairing of Paul Dimmer (9) and George Sheriff (14). The winner of the over 70’s trophy was Alan Forbes from Trent Park with 37 points.
Although the Ladies competition attracted a much smaller field the scoring was high. Madge Henry (11) from Perivale Park was the nett winner of the Barbara Rainey Bowl with 38 points. Runner up on count back was Julie Parrott (11) from Hainault with 36 points. In the Ladies Gross competition there was a three way tie on 27 points but the winner on count back from Madge Henry and Sandra Combstock (6) was Pamela King (8) representing Easthampstead Ladies. She will now play in the EG English County Champion of Champions tournament at Frilford Heath on the weekend of 8th/9th September 2018 for the NAPGC. The Reg Pugh Shield for the best team (combined stableford scores) went to the Richmond Park pairing of Val Riziotis (17) and Shenna Harrington (15) with 71 points. Hainault’s Mel McClaren(8)& Julie Parrott were runners up with 68 points.
