What a difference a year makes! Soaked through last time out, this year we were treated to a blisteringly hot summers day- and 36 holes to play! The day followed the usual format Scratch foursomes in the morning followed by eight singles matches played off scratch in the afternoon – Frilford Heath was again the venue but for a change we played all the matches on the Green Course
Claire Harman was the NAPGC Captain for the day organising the fousomes pairings and order of play for the afternoon. The NAPGC got off to a flying start with wins for Elaine Meagher & Linda Reeve (Little Hay), Sandra Combstock & Claire Harman (Hoebridge & Huntswood) and Jane Seabrook-Lea & Helen Parr (Farnham Park) while a new pairing from Thornbury (Gail Howells & TracyJones) halved a very tight match
The Army never march on an empty stomach so after a lunch of ham,egg and chips it was out once again to do battle. The Army team is always stong as they use this fixture to select their players for the fiercely contested Inter Services match against the respective Air Force and Navy teams. Unlike the morning the NAPGC started badly, losing the first three matches but fortunately there was a strength in depth to their team. The next four matches resulted in wins for the NAPGC with the final match going to the Army. A special mention must go to the three new players who all won their singles matches Helen Parr, Gail Howells and Tracy Jones. There were some great shots played out there from both sides -the Army's fitness regime meant that some of their girls could hit the ball prodigious distances leaving the civilians trailing in their wake! The NAPGC won the match 71/2 to 41/2 finally taking the Trophy home after three very narrow defeats.
Thanks go to Di Walters for orgaising the Army Team and for everyone who participated in the match., All agreed that the day was great fun and very competative and were all looking forward to returning next year
