For the final tournament of 2018 we again returned to the Eden Course at St. Andrews for the UKPCC final on 30th September. Those who had booked practice rounds for the Saturday had to contend with a very strong wind or a “gentle breeze” as the locals would say, but all survived. The final on the Sunday saw an early start – with temperatures lower than we have seen in recent years. There was a full field of 93 players all of whom had begun their St Andrews journey way back in the Spring with their club qualifying round. This was their reward no matter where they finished on the score sheet.
The first groups started at 7.30am not much after the sun had risen! There were some familiar faces amongst the competitors but there were also those who were getting their first taste of links golf and especially golf played on the links of St Andrews. The weather stayed fine throughout the day -dry with sunny intervals and a much gentler breeze. With breaks in the starting times play flowed freely around the course and once the final players were safely in the presentation of prizes could begin.
The NAPGC are grateful for the grant they receive each year from the R&A which enables the players to come to the home of golf. The grant covers the cost of the green fees and the remainder is shared with the players in the form of expenses -not much but every little helps! Our thanks also go the the Staff at the Eden Course Clubhouse who assisted the NAPGC officials throughout the weekend.
